
Kundalini Yoga and Weight Loss
Kundalini yoga will aid in helping people to lose weight, while getting and staying in shape. It will accomplish this simultaneously, providing immediate relaxation and tranquility in a calm and relaxed setting. This safe form of exercise offers the additional benefits of providing practitioners with greater body flexibility, stronger limbs and many other healthy benefits such as reducing daily stress.
A rigorous daily regime of practiced movements (called asanas), combined with several forms of specialized breathing techniques provide the body with many of the above mentioned benefits. Tried and proven chanting of specific sounds, while doing the asanas further combine to provide restful relaxation while practicing this unique form of yoga. What makes this yoga even more appealing is that students can practice at home through the use of extensive home videos and compact discs.
The practiced movements of Kundalini yoga are designed to burn body fat through the repetition of movements, combined with rapid breathing techniques of “Breath of Fire,” and slow, “Deep Breathing.” These techniques increase the body’s metabolism so that aspirants can obtain their ideal body weight while also optimizing one’s fitness and general state of beneficial health. The body’s digestive, respiratory and nervous systems are all developed during the practice of this beneficial yoga.
An additional component to weight loss is a person’s mental state and outlook. Kundalini yoga helps to rid negative emotions and thoughts, while creating an emotionally balanced state for individuals. This helps to promote feelings of joy, peace and self-contentment. With increased energy and vitality individuals can approach life with a more positive attitude and be more productive.
Basic Kundalini Yoga Instruction
Most Kundalini yoga instruction begins with sitting in a relaxed position with the legs crossed, the wrists resting comfortably on the knees, with the thumb and forefinger meeting. Aspirants are asked to chant a mantra three times to get in touch with their inner selves and to bring their minds to the present moment.
Next, a breathing exercise is begun to further center the individual and to oxygenate the body. This breathing is usually a form of deep breathing and brings a calming feeling, which is different than the more rapid, “breath of fire” which is done with some of the rigorous flowing movements. This rapid breathing causes the body’s glands to secrete and to purify the blood. This also allows the mind to become quiet, clear and experience a feeling of radiance.

After the centering breathing exercises come the asanas. Some of these poses are static and some are flowing, but all provide deep physical benefits to the body. Almost all of the muscles in the body are used at one time or another, to either maintain a pose or to move within a pose. The poses are timeless and have been designed to strengthen core muscles, limbs the abdomen and back.
The movement of the poses helps to provide flexibly to joints relieving stiffness and even improving some arthritic conditions. The combined techniques of Kundalini yoga have also been known to have contributed to lowered blood pressure and cholesterol providing an excellent cardio-conditioning regime for many.
